April 2022 - Dying Daffodil

But April also has some sad things. For me, as a Welshman, one of the great delights of Spring are the carpets of yellow daffodils that cover our flower beds, or public spaces. It’s such a pleasant sight to see the bright colours of these flowers as they start to grow and to bloom. As I write this (in early March) I have a pot of daffodils by my side, with delightful yellow flowers, helping me to think happy thoughts! Sadly, however, daffodils are not for ever, and inevitably after a few weeks they start to die.

I guess it’s some sort of reminder that that’s the ‘way of all flesh’, but that thought doesn’t exactly cheer me up. Maybe the thought of roses coming along, and all the other colourful blooms can boost my spirits!

This photo is not one that many people would think is worth taking. After all, the whole point of flowers is to see them in full bloom. Isn’t the sight of one about to finally drop and turn into mulch a bit sad and negative? Well, maybe it is, but it is all part of the rich ‘tapestry of life’ (apologies for the clichés) and has its own elegance. I was able to catch the dead (dying?) flower in the light, with the stem leading off into darkness. And the surround is also dark. I think that’s quite fitting!

Not a bad picture in my view.
